This easy hearty Brunswick stew is a classic Southern American dish, known for its delicious and comforting flavors. This stew typically combines meats like chicken or pork with vegetables in a savory tomato-based broth, making it a perfect choice for chilly evenings or family gatherings. We used pork only and its safe to say we loved the recipe!

What you need to make this easy hearty Brunswick stew recipe + substitutions:

Pulled pork butt- We slowed cooked a pork butt in the dutch oven for another meal and used the leftover pork for this recipe. A pork shoulder or shredded chicken would work well too for this Brunswick stew.

Yellow onion- Yellow onions are a kitchen essential and add so much flavor to meals.

Fresh garlic- Fresh garlic is 100% ideal here. There really is no substitute to fresh garlic!

Frozen lima beans- We used frozen lima beans and it’s the perfect compliment to a Southern dish.

Frozen corn- We used frozen corn but fresh corn would work as well!

Fire roasted tomatoes- We love using diced fire roasted tomatoes in our recipes because the charred, smoky tomatoes add a rich, slightly sweet depth of flavor to soups, stews, and sauces.

Chicken broth- We love using our homemade broth, but if we use store bought our favorite is kettle and fire. You can use the code DADDIOSKITCHEN for 20% off.

Tomato paste- Tomato paste can transform soups, sauces, and stews, adding great flavor.

Worcestershire sauce- Worcestershire sauce is a savory, tangy condiment made from a blend of vinegar, molasses, anchovies, and spices, adding depth and umami to dishes.

Hot sauce- We don’t typically use hot sauce because our kids don’t always love it. However, the little we added was a nice touch and hardly noticeable! We used Franks Red Hot, but any preferred hot sauce would work as well.

Barbecue sauce- Barbecue sauce is a tangy, smoky, and slightly sweet condiment that enhances the flavor of grilled or roasted meats. We used Primal Kitchen because it had no sugar and worked perfectly since we added a dash of brown sugar.

Brown sugar- We don’t typically cook with brown sugar but the little dash was a perfect touch.

Sea salt- We use Redmond sea salt, it’s our favorite and we use it in everything! You can use the code daddioskitchen for 15% off. We get the big big bag! 🙂

Black pepper-  Pepper is a must in most cooking!
