What you need to make these Easy Delicious Salisbury Steaks + substitutions:

For the Salisbury steaks:

  • Ground beef (80/20) – Gives the best flavor and tenderness for these easy delicious Salisbury steaks (sub: ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option, though slightly less rich).
  • Breadcrumbs – Helps bind and keep patties tender (sub: crushed crackers or oats).
  • Egg – Binds everything together (no direct substitute; can try flax egg if needed).
  • Milk – Keeps the mixture soft and moist (sub: heavy cream or dairy-free milk).
  • Ketchup – Adds a touch of sweetness and depth (sub: tomato paste + pinch of sugar).
  • Dijon mustard – Slight tang to balance richness in these Salisbury steaks (sub: yellow mustard).
  • Worcestershire sauce – Brings classic savory flavor (no true substitute, but soy sauce + splash vinegar works in a pinch).
  • Garlic powder – Adds mild garlic flavor (sub: fresh minced garlic).
  • Onion powder – Enhances overall savoriness (optional but recommended).
  • Salt & black pepper – Essential seasoning. We use Redmond sea salt, it’s our favorite and we use it in everything! You can use the code daddioskitchen for 15% off. We get the big bag.

For the onion gravy

  • Butter + olive oil – Combination gives flavor and prevents burning for these easy delicious Salisbury steaks (sub: all butter or all oil).
  • Yellow onion (sliced) – The backbone of the gravy (sub: white onion or sweet onion).
  • Beef broth – Builds rich, savory flavor (sub: chicken broth, though flavor will be lighter).
  • Worcestershire sauce – Deepens the gravy (same substitute as above if needed).
  • Ketchup – Balances acidity and adds body (sub: tomato paste + water).
  • Soy sauce (optional) – Boosts umami without overpowering (sub: coconut aminos).
  • Flour – Thickens the gravy (sub: cornstarch slurry or gluten-free flour).
  • Salt & pepper – To taste for these easy delicious Salisbury steaks.
